Experimental studies of atrial fibrillation: a comparison of two pacing models
Am J Physiol Heart Circ Physiol Laurent et al. 294: H1206

Corrigendum

The authors wish to note that there exists some overlap between the manuscript published in AJP-Heart and a manuscript published in the Journal of Cardiac Failure (Simultaneous right atrioventricular pacing: a novel model to study atrial remodeling and fibrillation in the setting of heart failure. Laurent G, Moe GW, Hu X, Pui-Sze So P, Ramadeen A, Leong-Poi H, Doumanovskaia L, Konig A, Trogadis J, Courtman D, Strauss BH, Dorian P. J Card Fail 14: 254-262, 2008).

Specifically, Table 3 in the AJP-Heart manuscript and Table 1 in the Journal of Cardiac Failure manuscript contain some overlapping data, wherein data for two animals at baseline were removed from and data for two additional animals were added to the Journal of Cardiac Failure manuscript, and the 14th day (post pacing) data were entirely reanalyzed with different echocardiography methods.

The authors' original intent was to submit two different sets of studies (acknowledging some overlap): the first was to be a "methods paper" detailing the effects of chronic simultaneous atrioventricular pacing on atrial fibrillation inducibility and heart failure. The second was to be a detailed comparison of the effects, both acute and chronic, of a traditional model used for the creation of atrial fibrillation and heart failure (the RV pacing model and this new simultaneous pacing model), which would include some detailed mRNA quantification of collagen in addition.

Due to a miscommunication between the two corresponding authors at the time that the original manuscript was submitted to AJP-Heart (August 2007), the corresponding author on the AJP manuscript (Dr. P. Dorian) was unaware that the companion study had been submitted to the Journal of Cardiac Failure. When the revision was submitted to AJP on October 1, 2007, the Journal of Cardiac Failure manuscript was still under review, and the two corresponding authors were unaware of the status of the other manuscript.

Details of this overlap should have been highlighted in the AJP-Heart manuscript, and explicit reference to the Journal of Cardiac Failure paper should have been made in the publication. The authors regret this oversight.
