REPLY: We thank Krijnen and Niessen (1) for their interest in our study (3) and welcome the opportunity to respond to their comments. First, we do not claim that clusterin is the only major protein that acts as an antiapoptotic agent and protects against H2O2-induced apoptosis in H9c2 cells. We have shown that four released factors from embryonic stem cells, including clusterin, display antiapoptotic activity (3). In fact, we consider that TIMP-1 is the major antiapoptotic protein present in embryonic stem cells-conditioned medium. Second, we missed their article (2) reporting antiapoptotic properties of clusterin in the ischemic cell culture model of H9c2 cells (2); however, our cell culture model of H2O2-induced apoptosis is different. Finally, we suggest that clusterin may not be a major antiapoptotic protein in our cell culture model. However, future studies are needed to fully understand this protein.
