Cover: Cells in the wall of an arteriole that have been microinjected with Lucifer yellow dye during electrophysiological recording in vivo. The dye is retained within the injected smooth muscle cell, shown wrapped around the endothelial cell layer. When injected into an underlying endothelial cell, dye spreads to other endothelial cells through gap junctions. See related article by D. G. Welsh and S. S. Segal. Am. J. Physiol. 274 (Heart Circ. Physiol. 43): H178-H186, 1998.
