Cover: Modified rodent skinfold chambers are useful preparations for studying the effects of tissue properties on implanted sensors. Chambers support a 200-μm layer of retractor muscle between a glass window and a planar array of electrochemical oxygen sensors, allowing simultaneous imaging of microvascular blood flow and recording of tissue oxygen levels. Microvascular patterns (shown here) and perfusion modulate the concentration-dependent signals of implanted sensors. These studies suggest new approaches to the design of implantable sensors and interpretation of substrate concentrations from their signals.
